Huntsman World Senior Games-Oct. 3-15, 2011

On October 3, 2011 the Huntsman World Senior Games in St George Utah begins. This year commemorates the 25thGunlock Utah Reservoir Spillway near St George UT anniversary for the Senior Games!  Not familiar with this event?  Many people aren't.  You'd be surprised to find out that this is the largest senior sports competition in the world according to our mayor, Dan McArthur.

Hundreds  of seniors come from all over the world to compete in these games each year.  The games began in 1987 as the World Senior Games, an international competition.  Originally contestants had to be 55 or older to compete, they changed that requirement to 50 years old in 1988.  In 1989, Jon M. Huntsman of the Huntsman Corporation, became the principal sponsor for the games.  He  recognized the value of seniors staying active, and living a healthy lifestyle.  He also understood the financial impact this event could and would have on Utah.

In addition to the athletic events, there is always health screenings which include tests for breast and prostate cancer.  There is  also screenings for diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure and bone density to name a few. There's also a social side to these games.  Concerts, dances and award socials play an important role encouraging participants to mingle with each other.

Many participants come to compete in the Huntsman World Senior Games and find this area so inviting that they return to purchase a home here in St George Utah.  There's so much to do here, whether you enjoy bicycling, hiking, walking or golf.  And the weather is just about perfect, year round!

Be sure to check out the Huntsman Senior Games if you're in town.  The events run from October 3-15, 2011. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.  They are being held at the Hansen Stadium, Dixie State College.  500 S. 700 E. St George Utah.  Admission is free.

Peach Days in Hurricane Utah~Labor Day Weekend 2011~Friday 9/2/11 & Saturday 9/3/11

It's time once again for Peach Days in Hurricane Utah. This event and this year promises to be a fabulous celebration.  Thepeaches theme for Peach Days this year is "A Celebration of our Heritage".  The event will be held on Friday 9/2/11 and Saturday 9/3/11.

I attended the first Peach Days when I moved to St George Utah 14 years ago, and I don't think I've missed one since.  It's a fun event to take the family to and has become a tradition for mine.

There's always plenty of food booths showcasing many different types of cuisine.  In years past, some of the local scout or youth groups have also had food booths to raise money for their organizations.  There's usually at least one booth selling Navajo Tacos, a local favorite!  Don't want a whole Navajo Taco?  How about a piece of Navajo Fry Bread with butter and honey?  One of my neighbors has had a booth at Peach Days for the last couple of years, it's Cindy's Phillipine Cuisine. I can't get enough of her egg rolls... If you happen to stop by her booth, be sure to tell her I sent you.

It wouldn't be Peach Days without booths selling different peach dishes.  You can find dutch oven peach cobbler, peach smoothies, peach preserves and peach ice cream just to name a few. Of course, there's a Peach Cook-Off! You can also purchase cases of locally grown fresh peaches at Peach Days.

Be sure not to miss the annual Peach Days parade, fiddling contest, rodeo, 12K run and Pioneer Corner. There's always local entertainment throughout the event too.

Silent Saturday~Sedona Arizona

I had never really been to Sedona Arizona before....I've always been in too big a hurry to get somewhere else! Well, I decided to stop and spend a few hours in Sedona last weekend. Now I can't wait to go back when I have more time to spend exploring the quaint shops, I want to visit a vortex or two and maybe take in Slide Rock State Park.Sedona ArizonaThis photo was taken from an outdoor cafe in downtown Sedona.  I thought it ws absolutely gorgeous-red rocks, blue sky and puffy white clouds.

Water Canyon near Zion National Park~Back-Country Adventures in Southern Utah

My daughter is an avid back-country enthusiast and takes advantage of all the great state and national parks that are located close to our home in St George Utah.  A couple of weeks ago she and her "posse" did the Water Canyon hike.  Water Canyon is located on BLM land just south of Zion National Park.  Access to the trail is located behind the remote town of Hildale Utah.Water Canyon near Hildale UT

Water Canyon is a narrow canyon that offers a little bit of everything for the outdoor enthusiast...big drops, narrow slots to navigate through, swimming pools to cool off in and even a pothole! Estimated hiking time is approximately 6 hours, it's about 3.3 miles estimated hiking distance.
