Conservation Tips for St George Utah Homeowners

Now that summer is in full swing, our air conditioners and sprinklers are running at full force here in St George Utah!  Here’s some tips for conserving precious water and electricity during the hot summer months.

  • Conservation Tips for St George Utah HomeownersTurn off the water while brushing your teeth. This saves approximately 1.5 gallons of water for every minute you brush
  • Take shorter showers.  Depending on your showerhead flow rate, you could save 10 gallons of water by shortening your shower 4 minutes
  • I read this on my shampoo bottle~turn off the water while you’re washing your hair, similar to turning it off while brushing your teeth.  I don’t like to stand in a cold shower, so I haven’t tried to implement this one yet!
  • Only run your dishwasher when it is full, same thing with your washing machine.  Don’t do any half loads of clothes or dishes!
  • I just replaced one of the toilets in my and currently, the City of St George is offering a rebate of up to $75 if you replace an old toilet with a WaterSense labeled one.  A statistic I read says that as much as 27% of residential indoor water use is flushed down toilets!
  • Water your outdoor lawn and plants between the hours of 8:00 pm and 8:00 am.  High day time temperatures lead to evaporation
  • Raise your thermostat setting to 78 degrees in the summer and use fans to circulate the air
  • Be sure to change your air filters frequently, every 30-45 days
  • Close the curtains/blinds during the day to keep the sunlight (& heat) from coming into your home
  • Try not to use the oven for cooking, it heats up your home.  Instead trying using the crock pot or grill outside
  • Change out your standard light bulbs for compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs.  They use a lot less energy and last longer. Be sure to look for the EnergyStar label
