Moving? The Things You Should Know

Moving can be tough for many individuals and families. Whether you’re moving yourself or having a professional mover move you, things can get broken, lost or stolen. Movers showing up late can also change the game up and throw everything off completely. Moving can also take a chunk out of your wallet. You can spend anywhere from $200 to do it yourself up to $10,000 to have a professional move you across the country. Therefore, I have some tips to help your move go as smooth as possible.

What to know before you move:

√ Budget – Whether you are moving yourself or having someone else do it, you need to know your budget before hand. Ask around and get guarantees that the prices they give you won’t increase once the job is done. However, you should expect to tip your movers for doing a good job.

√ Insurance – Make sure your movers have a proper mover’s insurance policy. Ask them if they insure by weight or by each item’s value. You can even ask for what specific policy they have and compare your quotes before deciding.

√ Inventory – Inventory your expensive items as they are loaded and have one of the movers check them off to assure they made it on the truck. This will help insure they make it to your new home also.

√ Payment – Ask what types of payment methods they accept so you don’t get caught off guard. You will need to make sure you have the proper form of payment on hand and ready to release when the move is complete.

√ Packing – Ask your moving company if they supply any packing materials as part of their moving fee. Sometimes they will supply boxes, tape, bubble wrap and more. And, they will bring them to you several days before your move.

√ Company check – Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau, review sites and on social media to see if you find any complaints against the company.

√ Designations – To help your move go smoothly, label your boxes clearly or assign a color for each room so they will know where to drop the boxes off and speed up the delivery. This will also help save money if you are paying the movers an hourly rate.
