Be sure to visit Red Hills Desert Garden in St George Utah during the month of October. You don’t want to miss the Scarecrow Walk and Haunted Canyon. Since 2015, this free, fun, walk through event has been taking over the Red Hills Desert Garden. Local businesses and organizations sign up for a Scarecrow or other Halloween display and some of them are quite creative. This year is no different and there are eerie displays along with fanciful ones.
Opening night this year was October 13, 2020. The Scarecrow Walk and Haunted Canyon will run from from October 13-October 31, 2020. Red Hills Desert Garden opens at 6 AM and closes at 10 PM every day.
Directional arrows will guide you through the garden to ensure you see all the displays while allowing for appropriate social distancing. No grand opening event will be held this year. Masks are encouraged.
Along with the scarecrows, the Haunted Canyon is always a crowd favorite. A small secluded area of the park is decorated in a more spooky (but still family friendly) fashion. You’ll need to look close because there are hidden surprises around each corner! Look high and low, spiders, mummies, pirates, and many, many skeletons are placed throughout the area to walk through and discover. Be sure to look down as you enter the Canyon, there’s a special scare awaiting you there! Some surprises are bigger than others, so keep a keen eye open.
Visiting at dusk might give you the best perspective of both areas. You need enough daylight to see the scarecrows, but once the sun sets, all the lights come on giving the whole area that Halloween vibe. The Haunted Canyon is much better in the dark, so wander down there once the sun has set. You’ll want to make sure and wander the entire garden area to see all of the desert beauty as well. The desert garden is home to many different species of desert plant life, in which the scarecrows seem to fit right into.
Local businesses go all out when creating their scarecrows, and they get very creative. It’s a fun time to see their different businesses represented through fall foliage and scarecrows. Many times, it’s not that hard to guess where each one came from (example, the taco cactus in 2018 was from a local Taco Time!).
The garden typically has over 15,000 visitors and this year will likely see an increase since many families are looking for outdoor activities this Halloween.
