Red Hills Desert Garden Project Nearing Completion
The Red Hills Garden project in St. George UT is now nearing completion of its third phase. The project is located on Red Hills Parkway just east of Pioneer Park. This current phase in the project will include a waterfall feature, a stream, trails, a plaza area, planters, irrigation and a parking lot. The first two phases included the formation of the building site, restrooms, pipes for the stream, retaining walls, faux rocks for the canyon feature, and a pump house.
The Red Hills Desert Garden was created as a world-class public education facility on the wildlife on the Virgin River and on water conservation. The new garden will showcase low water plants, native plants to Southern Utah and other desert plants. Each plant and its water requirements will be on display to the public when the garden is officially open. Homeowners can even learn what plants are best used in their own landscapes that can conserve water.
There will still be more work to be done in the final phase. Therefore, there are still ample opportunities for contributions of materials and labor if you are interested in helping. Things still needed include installing benches, entry ways, landscaping, shade structures and more. If you do contribute in any way, you will get a permanent recognition within the area.
Currently, the Red Hills Desert Garden is a joint project between several parties including Virgin River Resource Management and Recover Program, the City of St. George, Washington County, Washington County Habitat Conservation Plan, and Washington County Water Conservancy District.
The project should be completed by late summer or early fall of this year. And, admission will be free for all during regular park hours. You can visit www.sgcity.org/parks/info.php for more information about the garden.
