It’s time for the 4th annual Scarecrow Walk and Haunted Canyon at Red Hills Desert Garden here in Southern Utah. Since 2015, this free fun, walk through event has been taking over the Red Hills Desert Garden. Scarecrows and other decor made by local organizations and businesses are on display, and they get quite creative! Pictured here are examples from the 2018 Scarecrow Walk, which included those representing the Wizard of Oz, and a taco wielding cactus. Opening night this year is October 15, from 5-7 PM and there will be music and cookie decorating.

Scarecrow Walk St George UTAlong with the scarecrows, the Haunted Canyon is always a crowd favorite. A small secluded area of the park is decorated in a more spooky (but still family friendly) fashion. You’ll need to look close because there are hidden surprises around each corner! Look high and low, spiders, mummies, pirates, and many, many skeletons are placed throughout the area to walk through and discover. Some surprises are bigger than others, so keep a keen eye open.

Visiting at dusk might give you the best perspective of both areas. You need enough daylight to see the scarecrows, but once the sun sets, all the lights come on giving the whole area that Halloween vibe. The Haunted Canyon is much better in the dark, so wander down there once the sun has set. You’ll want to make sure and wander the entire garden area to see all of the desert beauty as well. The desert garden is home to many different species of desert plant life, in which the scarecrows seem to fit right into.

Local businesses go all out when creating their scarecrows, and they get very creative. It’s a Red Hills Desert Garden St George UTfun time to see their different businesses represented through fall foliage and scarecrows. Many times, it’s not that hard to guess where each one came from (example, the taco cactus is from a local Taco Time!). The garden had over 15,000 visitors just last year!

Are you interested in making a scarecrow? What’s a more fun way to represent and advertise your business or organization? it’s free to join in, and welcome to all to participate. Visit https://www.wcwcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/EntryForm.pdf to join!
